Carved tree spirits.                                          Contact Smuntz Wood

When I first read about how to carve tree spirits I read 'the tree spirit will appear from the
wood as you carve it, as if it had always been inside the tree, waiting to come out'.

I wasn't too sure about that. However, it really does turn out like that. From a concept that
you have, the basic design of the tree spirit appears as you carve. Rather than saying that
the finer you carve the detail the more errors appear, it just feels right that the wood
dictates something important and essential to the finished carving.

So, I can offer to carve a tree spirit for you to match your design idea. But, you will have to
accept that it will be an original, unique item that cannot be replaced. It will definitely differ
slightly from your design. That is just the way it is. Trying to change it would be similar to
painting the same painting twice, once on canvas and once directly onto a plastered wall
     - and then forcing the two images to be identical.

From left to right the gentlemen below are as follows:

A pouting and superior monk, well fed.
An inebriated thief who has stolen a golden crown.
A serious and glum old chap, with a brooding frown.
A traditional tree spirit with a wistful and puzzled appearance.

                        Four irritable gentlemen

The edge of the board is oak, and has a triangular pattern in an aged finish. The oak squares
are beautifully dark. The pine is light in colour but has an aged appearance. It measures
465mm (about 18 1/4 inches) square, and is 30mm (about 1 3/8 inches) thick. It weighs
     4.5kg (about 10lbs).

                                 Four people of the forest

This is a very old style of chessboard. There are no dividing strips between the squares,
and the squares themselves are not perfectly shaped or aligned. It measures 613mm
(about 24 inches) by 613mm square, and is 90mm (about 3 1/2 inches) high. It weighs
     just over 7kg (about 16lbs).

Oak chess board with yew edges

The beautiful chess board above is made of oak and pine, and has edges made of yew.
Between the squares there are thin separator strips of pine. It measures 548mm
(about 21 1/2 inches) by 548mm square, and is 27mm (just over an inch) thick. It weighs
     4760gms (about 10lbs 8ozs).
