If I were asked what I would do if I did not want to
earn a living the answer would still be
carpentry, or trees and wood would somehow be there. Well, one of the
things that I always
like to make is a small cabinet. It is a real opportunity to let your imagination
wander,
which probably has something to do with why I love making them.
Small cabinet - oak
![]() |
Here is a small cabinet, made to measure. The customer specified the width, depth and height. They chose to have it made of oak, and that it would be unstained - just wax polished. The bottom of the drawer and the back of the cabinet are made of pine. The handles, hinges and catches are brass. The lower half of the cupboard, below its single shelf, must be open in order to allow access to a telephone socket in the customer's hall.
Made and sold in August, 2005, for £225. |

The drawer has good dovetail joints all round, cut nails and a brass handle. Also, I cut a diamond shaped groove for decoration. This adornment is more apparent on the real cabinet. Perhaps I needed better lighting for the photograph. |

I have included this photograph just so that I can write about success. Vanity! Sometimes success means money, sometimes it means happy children, and sometimes it means recognition. When I had finished this cabinet I put it on my dining table so that I could photograph it. It looked almost green in the dawn light. As I drank my tea it occurred to me that on this occasion success meant that I was smiling because I had created something that I found beautiful, and that I was proud of. For Smuntz Wood, that is success. |
